Designing Web Usability : The Practice of Simplicity by Jakob Nielsen
There are many books written about Web design, however I feel this text gives the user a solid understanding of what makes a web site good: keeping it simple.

Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability by Steve Krug and Roger Black
This book provides before and after examples and discusses the importance of usability testing. I recommend it for advanced users and novices alike.

Learning Web Design by Jennifer Niederst
This popular text on Web design for beginners discusses how to make a usable site, creating a navigation system, images, and HTML basics.


Technology for Nonprofits TOP

Privacy Issues TOP

First, I must suggest that one read the following classics before delving into any specific texts on privacy issues.

1984 by George Orwell
Big Brother and the Thought Police should be common phrases to every high schooler. This science fiction text explores issues of conformity and totalitarian control.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
This classic novel takes place in the future, where firemen start fires instead of putting them out and books are their fuel. This story discusses censorship, however these issues directly relate to individualism, first amendment rights and share a close relationship with privacy advocates.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
"In 1984, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure." -A. Huxley. This book is yet one more futuristic look at a society that is numbed by drugs, and lack the ability to think for themselves, let alone think at all.


Privacy and Health: HIPAA 2003 by Roy Rada
A current text detailing the history, trends, administration and regulations of privacy policies with regard to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Academic in scope, nevertheless important reading.

Ethical Issues of Information Systems by Ali Salehnia (Editor)
Though its focus is primarily those in Information Systems, this book discusses basic issues such as Internet privacy, security, ethical business issues and piracy.

Corporate Privacy Handbook : Guidelines, Exposures, Policy Implementation, and International Issues by Albert J. Marcella and Carol Stucki
This book provides a reference on privacy guidelines, instruction on policy development and implementation to guide corporations in establishing a strong privacy policy.


General Reference Sites on the Web TOP

Google.com
Arguably the Internet's best search engine, Google allows users to search about anything. Also included are features such as Image Search, Froogle, where one can find the best prices on just about anything, Google News and more. Here are some of my favorite Google tips.

Dictionary.com
A digital dictionary and thesaurus with entries pulled from a variety of popular dictionaries upon searching. Word of the Day, Puzzles and other tools assist users in perfecting their language skills.


General Print Resources TOP

The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition by Strunk and White
This is the only manual you'll need with regard to usage, style, and form. At not even 100 pages, this succinct little book should be required reading for any college freshman.
