Employee Retention

In my volunteering activites, I've had the opportunity to examine the internal operations of many nonprofit organizations and I have noticed that some organizations spend more time training new employees than trying to hold onto the ones they already have. Throughout my courses and readings, I've come to the understanding that training and orientation of new employees is a costly and time consuming effort.

Many nonprofits have a need for great IT or computer gurus to maintain the Web page, fix the network or other computer issues. In California alone, there were 398 postings for help within the Computers and Technology section on Volunteer Match.

So why aren't more nonprofits holding on to the employees that believe in the mission, values and outcomes? The following article provides tips for being a good manager, a key position for retaining talented and valued staff and volunteers, but also reasons why people leave jobs and what your organization can do to cut down on turnover.
